"Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan Press On! has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race." - Calvin Coolidge

Ken's writing - April 17th report

A bit of a slow week writing wise. But if two pages is my new bottom line of what I can do when I just type and go for whatever comes out I will take it. I bounced Chapter 2 along to a possible conclusion, although I believe I'll get down a couple hundred more words in rough draft form, before going back to brush it up for a more polished draft. This pleases me as I can now move on to The Falls which would be Chapter 3. It could really be closer to Chapter 4 as the first 6 sections of Chapter 1 are likely to be expanded and broken into two separate chapters.
Important factors accomplished slash introduced in Chapter 2 are: Oliver's interest in religion and quantum mechanics, a continuation of Carl's fascination with astrology, more girl crazy behavior from Carl, and an brief illustration of Oliver's and Carl's relationship. AND, some work with dialogue, AND incorporating a conversation from the group critique into the story. This is the type of happenstance that when it comes, makes writing magic.
Very much looking forward toward picking up the story at The Falls,  as I will get to bring in the history of the Paterson area and Carl's connection to the mythology of the Leni Lenapi, and fascination with the development of industry around The Falls. A built in metaphor for the transition of the naturalism of native Americans (or usurption) to western thought based on industry and commerce, to a failure of that system as the silk mills were killed by the invention of polyester.
Also proud that I had the foresight to write a two page introduction for Chapter 3 The Falls, when I got stuck on Chapter 2 Oliver's Place. I will do the same for Chapter 4 - Garrett Mountain (assuming I get stuck on Chapter 3 - Ha!)
In short, for this coming week, I will increase my production, with two pages as the minimun and the skies the limit, as I am moving forward with tremendous optimism.
